the dead and dying
their cries
unheard
this hour
when politicians
dine
at
sculpted tables
made
somewhere else

A world of peace
in New York Times photos --

German paper doves

and Pakistani boys dressed

as injured Iraqi children.

i am a rogue reporter
targeted by the smart bombs
this is my last transmission

the sky is black
the noise is deafening
crater erupts from crater
the shaking is incessant
words fail me
yet somehow i must speak
of this hellish hour
that killed more Iraqis than Saddam
in his entire rule
they came to us with flowers

but now
at last
they are free
free of Saddam
free of their nation
free of their infrastructure
free
of the bodily condition

& we have given them riches
who never asked

we made them rich
rich in swift death
rich in slow death
rich in uranium
rich in lamentation
rich in orphans
& for the few to survive
i greet you
on the other side of the abyss
welcome my children welcome
to the first day

of world war three

Never to Travel Home Again
cherry bombs and bottle rockets

gi joe storms
the sand box

barbie bakes
a box of brownies

lady fingers and whistlin' petes

and we light
another
another
and another

until
gold stars
blue stars
red crescents cover shattered windows

another father's son
another daughter
waits the last parade

the monument on the mall

a rest stop in Oregon
post office in Nebraska
park bench in Maine
street in Seattle
patrol boat on Chesapeake Bay

named for places in the sand
and young men who never voted

no one noticed
a pretty girl without a ribbon in her hair
cry

into a box of broken cookies

In sixty eight we marched
Our tie dyes and peace banners
Reflected in the cop's mirrored shades
How easy to be so sure
At eighteen....
Now another war
I watch on TV
I read the news
I sit
Not marching now
Just watching in horror
And wondering
Looking back down through the years,
What have we learned?

Took a ride tonight
Out past the old railroad tracks
Out by the airport
I can recall
Summer nights when I was a kid
Watching the planes come in
Shaking my world, shaking me
But tonight....
My own kids are quiet, in awe
Of the twisted buildings, the destruction
They don't believe me when I tell them
That once upon a time
Planes flew through that sky
They laugh at me, roll their eyes
When I tell them how it used to be
They don't believe in planes
Or birds
Or flowers
They only believe in what they see.
"Mum, you're so silly," my little girl giggles
I stare out at the empty, empty sky
"You're right, honey, I am...."

a war illegal
a war unjust
thieves and liars
not worthy of trust

believe not their lies
heed not their call
their words are poison
stunning us all

no noble cause
no will to do good
driven by greed
don't do as they should

how far will they go?
where will it end?
dark times lie ahead
unless united we stand!

Symbols
Two-thousand years ago
The Roman Empire
Sacrificed their Legions
For a symbol,
The Eagle
... Today;
Americans.
